Visitor Center

When the Central Pacific Railroad met and connected to the Union Pacific Railroad at Promontory, Utah, it was the beginning of the end for the American frontier. On May 10, every year, there is a reenactment of the driving of the golden spike held at Promontory Utah.

What's at the visitors center?

The Golden Spike Visitor Center is open 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. daily, from May through September.  From October through April the visitor center is closed on Mondays and tuesdays. The center is closed for Thanksgiving, Christmas, and on New Year's Day. Here you will find slide programs, films, a variety of exhibits, and even a bookstore. In addition, 1.7 miles of track have been re-laid on the original roadbed where the rails were actually joined. Working replicas of the Jupiter and  No.119 steam engines operate from May through September.

Drives and Walks
The Promontory Trail is a self guided auto tour nine miles long. It runs along historic railroad grades. A guidebook is available at the visitor center. For those with less time, the 1 1/2 mile Big Fill Trail follows the railroad grades to one of the most impressive structures in the park. (We won't say what it is; you'll have to find out for yourself!) Trail guides are available at the Big Fill Trail parking area. Entrance fees to Golden Spike National Historic Site Entrance are as follows:

Early May through September: $4.00 per person or $7.00 per vehicle
October through April: $3.00 per person or $5.00 per vehicle.

Golden Eagle, Golden Age, and Golden Access Passports are welcome and can be obtained at the visitor center. An annual pass for Golden Spike is available for $15.00. Call for commercial tour fee rates.

Safety tips
For your own safety, stand back from the steam locomotives when they are in operation - a scalding could ruin your vacation very quickly. Beware of hot, greasy locomotive and engine parts. Do NOT place coins or objects on the rails. Observe the speed limit and drive with special care along the railroad grade.
